Disney on Ice was the idea of Feld Entertainment Inc. CEO Kenneth Feld. It came to him after he realized that the ice skating shows, specifically Ice Follies and Holiday on Ice, only attracted mature audiences. While brainstorming, he considered including a 20-minute segment dedicated to Disney characters on their shows. In 1980, he decided to pitch this proposition to Disney. However, the entertainment company did not agree. They did not see the need to expand to this entertainment niche as they did in the 30s and 40s when they allowed the Ice Capades company to bring their characters to the ice. But, with quick thinking, Feld suggested creating a complete show instead for Disney. The higher-ups from the entertainment company were sold.
In the beginning, developing a skating Disney show was tricky. Feld Entertainment found it challenging to translate the Disney magic to the ice. They needed to be more familiar to the characters. To answer this problem, they decided to focus on the most recognizable. Walt Disney Productions’ World on Ice opened for public viewing in 1982. Five years later, the show went international as Happy Birthday Donald was performed in Japan. It took another decade, and the show was renamed Disney on Ice. There are 11 current shows; included in this is Into the Magic.
Disney on Ice: Into the Magic (which was named Princess Classics, Dare to Dream, and then Live Your Dreams) premiered in 2002. The show showcased most Disney Princess movies at the time. Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, and Mulan became show favorites. The performances were hosted by Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Goofy. There are updates as time goes by. In 2008, Tinker Bell joined the extravaganza. Another update occurred in 2011. Tiana, Rapunzel, The Princess and the Frog, and Tangled cast were added. Two years later, the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs became the highlight of the show.
In the current version, the lineup includes Belle, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Moana and Maui, Miguel from Coco, Anna, Elsa, Hans, Kristoff, and Olaf from Frozen, with hosts Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy.
The showcase will immerse you into the magic as the lights focus on the skating rink, and then the first few notes begin to articulate a familiar melody. Before even the performers come in, the staging entices excitement. Disney on Ice is more than just a show; it is storytelling at its best. The tales people have fallen in love with are realized in a spectacular, alluring way on this display.

It becomes mesmerizing as Beauty and the Beast takes center stage in the repertoire. Being the first among the fairytales, it is a classic jubilance. The highlights of the movie are played out on the ice. Belle entices as she sings and prances. Right after this, the focus moves on to Rapunzel and Flynn on the boat singing “I Have a Dream” and “I See the Light.” The frying pan moment is hilariously played out in this showcase. Then comes the girl with the glass slippers. Cinderella gracefully twirls in a ballgown with her Prince Charming — such a wholesome thing to see. After this, the Frozen gang continues the tale. The beloved “Love is an Open Door,” “Let It Go,” and “In Summer” are flawlessly performed. Olaf is a scene-stealer, of course!
Moreover, Coco’s Miguel makes the whole experience better. Glow-in-the-dark performances are mindblowing in this part. Last but definitely not the least is Moana’s adventure at sea. “How Far I’ll Go” has never been executed as grand as on ice. There are shiny surprises you do not want to miss. The camaraderie with figure skating grace and Disney magic forms wonderfully resonant and heartfelt performances.
Paired with all the performances are the props and staging. It is an understatement to say they live up to the original movies. Lights, practical effects, and costumes work seamlessly and cleverly. You see the skating rink transform on each performance.
